Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have puppies available?
Like most reputable breeders, I only occasionally have litters available. This is my hobby, NOT a business. Meaning, we don’t have large quantities of dogs that we breed in order to make a profit. And to be honest, this isn’t the kind of breed YOU would want to work with anyway. We breed quality dogs that are first and foremost wonderful pets. We strive to produce healthy puppies not through luck or chance, but through rigorous health testing as is defined by the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America (and you’re able to see all health testing by clicking on the sire and dam). We also strive to produce puppies that have wonderful temperaments. We feel to do this, you need to be able to dedicate time to each puppy. In the early weeks, we follow the “Early Neurological Stimulation” protocol to make sure our puppies are as well rounded as possible setting your puppy up for a life of joy.
How much are puppies?
Portuguese Water Dog puppies range in price from coast to coast. They typically fall somewhere in the range of $2500 to $3500. Beware of breeders that are selling to you based on color (rare or otherwise), price increase due to gender, or due to lineage. Reputable breeders don’t typically set prices like this as they know the puppies temperament is more important than looks when placing a dog, they always provide you with proof of health testing never do they casually say “I’ve never had that problem so I don’t test” and they typically have a spay/neuter contract for non-show dogs.
What colors will you have?
That will depend on the sire and dam, but PWD’s come in brown (and various shades that may fade over the years), Black, Black and white (with varying degrees), and White with Black markings. Though people are often drawn to a puppy by the looks because that’s the only thing they know to look for they should be looking for guidance on the BEST temperament to fit their lifestyle. In one litter you can have a wild child and a chill, laid-back puppy. If you like do some occasional weekend hiking and playing the pool in the summer the wild child might be too much for you. A puppy with a temperament that doesn’t match the new home is a puppy that is going to cause someone a lot of headache (ever seen a dog eat through a wall…including the drywall because it didn’t get enough exercise?).
But I don't want a show dog I just want a pet
That’s great, because our dogs are first and foremost wonderful family pets. Whether you want a dog to go boating with or your next performance dog, you’ll want a dog that has all of it’s health testing done (with proof from the OFA), a dog with a wonderful temperament and parents that are known for longevity and health in their pedigree.
How do I get on the puppy list?
Congrats! You’ve decided to take the next step into searching for you next forever friend. To get on our puppy list you need to:
- Read the FAQ’s above. We want to make sure you know a little bit about us and our puppies. Also make sure you peruse the site to get more information about us and our dogs.
- Complete our puppy questionnaire (CLICK HERE). Once completed it’s sent to us and we then will set up time to chat with you to see if you’re really ready for a puppy (they are a LOT of work) and see if we’re the right breeder for you.
- If you are selected for one of our puppies, we’ll put you on the list for either the current litter or next litter. Just remember, we select the puppy that will best fit for you based on temperament not looks. I’ve worked with owners and dogs over 20 years now. People never return dogs because they didn’t have enough white. They return them because their temperament and activity level wasn’t compatible with their new home! We want you to have the puppy of your dreams!
